The NIE Number (Numero de Iidentificacion de Extranjero) is a foreigner's tax identification number and is needed in Spain to do any of the following:
Open a Bank Account
Apply for a Mortgage
To Pay Taxes
Buy, Sell or Insure a Property
For Employment
To Start a Business
To Register with Social Security
To Apply for a Diving License
To Buy a Car
Any resident or non-resident foreigner with financial affairs in Spain MUST HAVE AN NIE NUMBER. The process of application is very easy, usually made with a legal representative or translator. The application can be made at any police station that has a foreigner's department, or Officina de Extranjeros, in Spanish. A Stamped Receipt from the Bank with Payment of Fees
An Identity Card or Original Passport and a Photocopy
Two Passport Photographs
