Although not quite as well known as the Costa Blanca to the north, the Costa Cailda, or ‘Warm Coast’ is a region that is fast becoming a firm favourite with both holiday makers and long term residents .
Like the Costa Blanca,the Costa Calida is blessed with a climate featuring over 300 days of annual sunshine, which promotes a variety of sports and outdoor activities throughout the year. You can enjoy a round of golf on one of the many top class golf courses located in the region, or spend the day on one of many miles of beaches, unspoilt coves and fabulous resorts which lines the two seas of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor. The Mar Menor is the largest natural lagoon in Europe, however,both offer crystal blue seas to swim in, and family friendly beaches to relax and enjoy. For the more sporting types there are many opportunities to enjoy a variety of water sports.
Whilst the Costa Calida and Murcia region provide many familiar sights you may see at home, it also offers the opportunity to immerse yourself if you choose in the Spanish way of life and culture. A short journey inland is the historical City of Murcia, rich in Moorish and Spanish architecture. Situated on the coast is the ancient Port of Cartagena, with the many reminders of its connections with the Roman and Carthegian Empires. Further east is the Holy City of Caravaca de la Cruz and Lorca, both of which are steeped in history.
For those of you that may want to spend some time away from the coast, the inland region offer s scenery that is second to none. Enjoy the walks and greenery of the surrounding mountain ranges, such as the Sierra Espunta, or investigate the vineyards in the north east of the region.

Resorts and Beaches to suit everyone
In the Costa Calida you are spoilt for choice with a good selection of resorts and beaches. Starting at the northern tip of the Mar Menor are San Pedro del Pinatar and Lo Pagan. The two resorts and their beaches form a very popular destination and offer a wide range of bars and restaurants. The nearby Nature reserve is home to a variety of bird life feeding from the salt marshes. This is accessible by a number of walkways and provides a closer view of La Manga strip. The mineral content of the mud extracted from this area is used in several Spas nearby.
Santiago de la Riberia is a very picturesque Spanish resort with a wide esplanade running alongside the beach and has a good selection of shops and cafes. Situated at the centre of the Mar Menor is Los Alcazares and Los Narejos. The wide promenade is lined with palm trees and 7km of safe beaches for all to enjoy. There are excellent views across the Mar Menor to the La Manga strip and the hills beyond. Los Alcazares is also the centre for many of the year round water sports that are available.
At the southern end of the Mar Menor is the access to the La Manga strip. This small strip of land runs for approximately 20km and is a hive of activity with a selection of bars, restaurants and hotels. Further west past Cartagena the coast becomes less populated and is dominated by the Bay of Mazarron. There are a large number of white sandy beaches and resorts to explore, a good example being Puerto de Mazarron. Follow the coastline to the old Roman port of Aguilas and enjoy this old Spanish town.
Sport for All
Just like the other Spanish Costas, the Costa Calida is fortunate to possess a number of fabulous Golf courses to suit golfers of all abilities. The long established destination in the arae for golfers has been the internationally recognised La Manga Resort. It offers three 18 hole Championship courses with stunning views of the Mar Menor as well as excellent facilities for Tennis and Football. La Manga has been widely used by the professional sporting world for Winter and short term training and relaxation breaks. As well as La Manga, the keen golfer can enjoy his sport at other excellent courses. Located close to Los Alcazares is Roda Golf Course which has a well designed 18 Golf Course and practise facilities and a new Clubhouse with an excellent Bar and Restaurant. Apartments and townhouses on the complex offer an excellent base for the holidaymaker and resident alike.
In recent years Polaris World has invested heavily in the region and it has a number of resorts which offer an excellent opportunity for property investment, as well as great golf. The most widely known is the Mar Menor Golf Resort which was used for the TV advertisements featuring Jack Nicklaus. The Resort now offers a 5 star International Hotel and Clubhouse and a challenging 18 hole Golf Course. There are great deals available to play on the Nicklaus Golf Trail to enable you to enjoy both Mar Menor and the other Polaris World Courses nearby.
Other courses of note include La Serena where 16 of the 18 holes feature water hazards and located inland is Lo Romero which is fast establishing a great reputation as a ‘must play’.
For the non golfer there are many opportunities in the region to enjoy a variety of sports. As mentioned earlier, Water sports do feature heavily with great facilities for Sailing, Scuba Diving, Wind and Kite Surfing and Fishing. Tennis and Bowling can be found in abundance and further inland Camping, Walking and Mountain Biking are available in the Sierra Espuna Regional Park.
Retail Therapy
There are many excellent Commercial Centres of all types to spend some time looking for those excellent bargains to be had. In Los Alcazares is the main shopping walkway in Avenida Rio Nalon. It offers a number of cafes, restaurants and shops offering all types of goods and services. The supermarket Mercadona is also located at the northern end of the walkway. On a larger scale is the Dos Mares Commercial Centre located near San Javier. There are an excellent range of shops and the large Supermarket chain Eroski is located within the centre. As well as a number of eating establishments the Centre also has a multi screen Cinema.
Located on the outskirts of Cartagena is the Parque Mediterraneo Shopping Centre. It also offers a good variety of shops, restaurants and a multi screen cinema and a Carrefour supermarket. Explore the centre of Cartagena itself and you will also find El Corte Inlges, one of Spain’s flagship departmental stores. Murcia City can also provide a variety of shops both within the Centre and at Commercial Centres located on the outskirts.

Places of Historical Interest
For holidaymakers and residents wishing to know more about this region there are plenty of places of interest to explore. Cartagena and Murcia City have already been mentioned for their historical significance. Cartagena is not just worth a visit to see the port and roman theatre but also stroll down the Calle Mayor to witness the ongoing restoration bringing many fabulous buildings back to their former glory. Murcia has many museums and buildings of historical interest and offers a flavour of traditional Spain. Caravaca de la Cruz is an ideal location for anyone interested in religious architecture and heritage and Lorca dates back to the very early days of civilisation.

Transport links
The region is well served by both national and international transport systems. Alicante (El Altet) Airport is located approximately an hour to the north and has all year round flight services to the UK and the rest of Spain and Europe. Murcia(San Javier) is located at the heart of the region and provides a much closer alternative, especially during the months of March to October.
The road systems are excellent with the AP7 Motorway providing a fast link to Alicante (1 hour) and Valencia (2.5 hours) in the north and Almeria and the very south of Spain (Malaga 5 hours). The A30 motorway links Cartagena and Murcia and runs all the way to Madrid (4 hours)
There are train stations located at Torre Pacheco and Balsicas with direct services to Cartagena, Murcia, Madrid, Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona. There are good discounts available if you book online in advance with the train company RENFE.
